This course is primarily focused on the role that China plays in the modern cultures of Europe and North America. The first part of the course is focused on historical themes (mainly from the 16th century), while the second part deals primarily with contemporary issues. One of the main goals of this course is to critically analyze contemporary Western writings on China: where do their interests come from? and what they are trying to achieve with their writing?
